Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown discusses how the Smiley case -- which ended in both defendants pleading guilty -- has torn apart the lives of two families and did incalculable harm to the birth parents. Both Barry and Judith Smiley admitted in court that their actions 22 years ago in taking a baby they had hoped to adopt and fleeing to New Mexico after a court directed that the child be returned to the birth parents were criminal.
