QUEENS DISTRICT ATTORNEY RICHARD A. BROWN NAMES ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEYS ANTHONY COMO AND TARA COUGHLIN AS RECIPIENTS OF THE ELEVENTH ANNUAL HAL MILLER WEINSTEIN MEMORIAL AWARD

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown today announced that Assistant District Attorneys Anthony Como and Tara Coughlin have been named the recipients of the Queens District Attorney's Office's eleventh annual Hal Miller Weinstein Memorial Award.

In a ceremony held today in the District Attorney's Office, District Attorney Brown presented the award to Assistant District Attorneys Como and Coughlin. The award is given annually in honor of former Assistant District Attorney Hal Miller Weinstein who died tragically in a car accident in April, 1992.

Among those present were the late Assistant District Attorney's father, Jonathan Weinstein, Esq., his grandfather, the Honorable Moses M. Weinstein, a former Justice of the Appellate Division, and his brother, Lloyd, who is also an attorney. Also in attendance were members of the Class of 2001 and the Executive Staff of the District Attorney's Office.

District Attorney Brown said, "Each year this award is presented to one or more of our first year class assistants who most exemplifies Hal Weinstein's spirit, enthusiasm and dedication to public service. Hal touched the lives of many of us here in this office. He was one of our most promising young assistants whose warmth and friendship was felt by all of us. The professionalism demonstrated by Anthony Como and Tara Coughlin as well as their deep commitment to the office truly exemplify the spirit of Hal Weinstein."

Assistant District Attorney Como, who joined the District Attorney’s staff in March 2001, graduated from Hofstra University School of Law and did his undergraduate work at Queens College of the City University of New York. He was a special assistant to State Senator Serphin R. Maltese before joining the District Attorney’s office. Assistant District Attorney Como was first assigned to the District Attorney’s Intake Bureau and more recently -- to the District Attorney’s Criminal Court Bureau.

Assistant District Attorney Coughlin, who joined the District Attorney’s staff in August 2001, graduated from St. John’s University School of Law and did her undergraduate work at Villanova University. She worked as a legal assistant for the District Attorney’s Integrity Bureau while attending law school. She interned at the United States Attorney’s office for the Southern District/Narcotics Unit, was a community assistant for City Council Speaker A. Gifford Miller and a legislative aid to Representative Carolyn B. Maloney. Assistant District Attorney Coughlin was first assigned to the District Attorney’s Intake Bureau and more recently -- to the District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Bureau.

Previous recipients of the award are: John W. Kosinski (Class of 1991), Shawn Kerby (Class of 1992), Joseph K. Donovan (Class of 1993), Lisa Drury (Class of 1994), Kelly Cardany (Class of 1995), Shawn Clark (Class of 1996), Patricia Malloy (Class of 1997), Kristin Coccaro and Gabriel Tapalaga (Class of 1998) and Courtney Goodloe (Class of 2000), Rosemary Chao (2001).
