QUEENS LEGISLATORS, JUDGES AND OTHER OFFICIALS TO SPEAK AT FAR ROCKAWAY SCHOOLS DURING "SAY NO TO VIOLENCE WEEK"
Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown announced today the fourth annual "Say No To Violence Week" March 22nd to March 26, 1999, a celebration of the Far Rockaway Community's efforts to prevent youth violence, especially handgun violence. Featured speakers include former Mayor David N. Dinkins, New York City Sheriff Teresa Mason, Congressman Gregory Meeks, and Detective Steven MacDonald who was paralyzed by gunshot wounds while trying to stop a robbery.
District Attorney Brown said, "This week-long event encourages the young people of Far Rockaway to make peaceful choices when settling their problems. We hope to let them know that their parents, teachers and their public officials support and encourage their efforts."
Throughout the week, each of the eight participating Far Rockaway schools will be festooned with posters created by the students. The winners of the schools' poster and essay contests will be announced. A special presentation will be given at participating schools by the Gunrunners, a group of 35 young people who have all sustained permanent spinal cord injuries after being shot. The group is dedicated to raising awareness, especially among teens, of the devastating effects of handgun violence.
